Many Kansas City organizations and resources are dedicated to gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, youth and straight allies. Their missions are to offer help, be advocates for and equip the LGBT community with information and services. These groups can help members in the community become aware of and be comfortable with their identities, sexuality, offer education programs and become knowledgeable of their health status and risks. Here are some of those resources.
AIDS Service Foundation
The foundation works to raise money and awareness for organizations that provide shelter, medical care and emergency services for men, women and children in Kansas City affected by HIV/AIDS.
Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS KC
DIFFA KC supports the prevention of HIV and AIDS by funding education and awareness programs in the Kansas City area, and seeks to arrest the spread of HIV in the community.
Empowering Queer Activists and Leaders
EQUAL in KC works to create a Gay Straight Alliance Network, connecting queer youth across the metropolitan area. EQUAL organizes an annual Empowerment Summit, National Coming Out Day and the Day of Silence.
Its mission is to end discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity, working toward that mission through education, public policy advocacy and political action.
Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation
GLAAD rewrites the script for LGBT equality. As a dynamic media force, GLAAD tackles tough issues to shape the narrative and provoke dialogue that leads to cultural change. GLAAD protects all that has been accomplished and creates a world where everyone can live the life they love.
Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network
GLSEN strives to assure that each member of every school community is valued and respected regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity/expression.
Good Samaritan Project
GSP is a not-for-profit AIDS Service Organization founded near the start of the AIDS epidemic and provides advocacy, care and education to those affected by HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections.
Hope Family Care Center
HFCC is a faith-based, patient-centered medical facility providing quality primary health care to Kansas City, Missouri’s east side and is the only primary care provider operating within this service area, and one of few community options.
Human Rights Campaign
The HRC is America’s largest civil rights organization working to achieve gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender equality. By inspiring and engaging, HRC strives to end discrimination against LGBT citizens HRC has a local diverse volunteer group that fights for LGBT equality in Missouri and Kansas alongside state and local groups and lawmakers.
Kansas City Anti-Violence Project
KCAVP is a Missouri nonprofit corporation committed to providing domestic violence, sexual assault and hate crimes advocacy and education to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.
Kansas City CARE Clinic
The clinic promotes health and wellness by providing quality Care, Access, Research and Education to the underserved and all people in our community.
Kansas City Passages
KCP is Kansas City’s only youth center dedicated to gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, questioning youth and straight allies. Its mission is to equip LGBT youth to become aware of and comfortable with their identities, knowledgeable of their health status and risks and actively involved in the Kansas City community.
The Lighthouse is a LGBT center that provides a broad array of services for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.
Mid America Gay & Lesbian Chamber
The chamber is an organization that advocates, promotes and facilitates the success of the LGBT business community and its allies through the guiding principles of equality, inclusion, economics and education.
Midwest Alternative Family Alliance
The alliance was organized in 2002 by a small group in Kansas City that was concerned that local gay and lesbian parents and prospective parents needed a presence, a voice and a way to connect with each other. MAFA supports LGBT parents in the greater Kansas City area and beyond to build families and raise children in a community that is respectful, encouraging and inclusive.
An affiliate of the AIDS Service Foundation of Greater Kansas City, the Millennial League is a group of young adults belonging to the Millennial Generation who share a common interest in promoting HIV/AIDS awareness.
Ozanam Pathways Program
Pathways LGBTQ Resource Program provides training and resources for staff and foster parents who work with this population. The goal of the program is to promote understanding through education so that attitudes will be changed and kids no longer will be traumatized.
This group provides a safe, inclusive atmosphere for youth of any and all identities. It fosters positive identity development through excellence in musical performance and creative expression.
Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays of Kansas City
PFLAG-KC is a group of parents, siblings, friends, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered (LGBT) people who provide a support system for the families and friends of LGBT people; to enable them to understand, accept and support their children with love and pride. Two meetings a month.
Project Equality believes in equality and justice in the workplace. It unites the corporate, nonprofit, education and religious communities into a force for equality, justice and fairness in the workplace, and works collaboratively to spotlight the best resources in our region that empower fairness in the workplace.
PROMO is Missouri’s statewide organization advocating for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender equality through legislative action, electoral politics and community education.
This group provides comprehensive housing solutions to empower socially and medically disadvantaged people to improve their health and lead stable lives with personal dignity.
The Transgender Institute
The institute is a gender therapy and coaching organization dedicated to serving the transgender population through Transgender Growth Therapy. It offers in-office consultation, off-site training, coaching and therapy sessions, as well as online sessions.
This group provides Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Questioning, Intersex, Asexual and Ally students with the support, resources and education needed to become a full member of the UMKC campus community and the communities where they live.
University of Kansas LGBT Resource Center
The Center for Sexuality and Gender Diversity is a clearinghouse of information regarding issues affecting the gender and/or sexuality minority community (LGBTQIA+) — as well as straight friends, family members and allies.
